National Center for Disease and Control (NCDC) and Lugar Center
Health Security Partners hosted a 3-day workshop at the National Center for Disease and Control (NCDC) and Lugar Center in Tbilisi, Georgia from 25-27 January 2023. The workshop brought together 21 representatives from high containment laboratories (HCL) in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Romania. To begin the workshop, participants received an in-depth tour of the Lugar Center by their biosafety officer. During the workshop, participants engaged in interactive conversation on topics such as creating a common understanding for biosafety and biosecurity terms, how biosafety and biosecurity applies to existing national and institutional frameworks, and how to identify risks and implement mitigation measures within their institutions. The main highlight of the workshop was the discussion sessions, where participants discussed the major challenges regarding biosafety and biosecurity and possible solutions in establishing biosafety and biosecurity mitigation measures within their institutions. HSP will work to continue strengthening the knowledge and capacity of biosafety and biosecurity in current and future workshops.
